THE NEW HUNGER: EAT THIS BOOK

Listen up because this is the last time I'm going to say this.*

I wrote a prequel to WARM BODIES and it's called THE NEW HUNGER and it's available now.

I foretold the coming of this book in my previous post and explained at length what it is (a novella) and what it's about. (horrible things happening to sweet children and sweet children happening to horrible things.) Now it has come, and I want you to read it.

This is not quite the final cover design...the kids look weird...but it's close enough.

BUT WAIT!

Before you go, I need to explain some things to you.

1.
I'M SORRY BUT THIS IS AN EBOOK.
Due to time constraints involved with trying to make this book line up with the release of the WARM BODIES movie, THE NEW HUNGER is just an eBook for the moment. BUT! Paper books are very important to me, as are all the readers who hate reading on computer screens, so a print edition will follow in the near future. I love paper. I love real books. But it happens that eBooks are much, much faster to put out, and this is why you're getting this sudden, last minute announcement for this book rather than a big media parade leading up to the release.

2.
YOU DO NOT NEED A TABLET DEVICE TO READ IT! You can read the eBook on your Mac or PC. There will be instructions on how to do this somewhere on the Zola page.

3.
WHAT THE HELL IS ZOLA? WHY CAN'T I GET IT ON AMAZON, IBOOKS, ETC?

This is the biggest point of confusion, so allow me to explain.

Zola Books is a new eBook retailer, but it's a lot more than that. It's a hub for the entire literary universe. When it's fully up and running (which will be a while; it's still very much in beta) it will be a place where lovers of books can congregate, interact with each other, discover and purchase new books, and have a direct line to the authors they already love. It will be a community that brings readers together and connects readers with authors in a way that's never been done before. There are other sites that do some of things Zola will do, but there is no site that does all of it in one place, and there are things Zola will do that no one else does anywhere. It's like an insane and beautiful hybrid of Facebook, Goodreads, Blogger, Amazon, and Netflix, centered around nothing but BOOKS. No movies, no video games, no paper towels or office furniture, no pictures of cats or sandwiches or lists of your friends' favorite bowel movements--just books! Fucking BOOKS, man!

These things.

Zola is a new concept built in defiance of the massive conglomerates (Amazon, mainly) that currently dominate the book marketplace. Zola is a young upstart trying to change the landscape. It's author-centric, putting most of the control (and profits) in the author's hands and going to unprecedented lengths to connect writers and readers in meaningful ways. It's about giving books a cultural spotlight that currently only exists for music and movies. It's about drawing readers out of their bedrooms and connecting them to each other and to the literary culture stream, and making the experience of loving books a little less lonely.

4.
ZOLA IS IN BETA!
Having said all those great things about Zola, I need you to keep in mind that it's far, far from finished. They're still putting all these systems together, so a lot of the stuff I've described isn't functional yet, and some of the stuff that is functional is extremely buggy. Please give them some grace when trying to buy THE NEW HUNGER, because we are launching this book before Zola is really open for business, kicking down their locked doors and assaulting the cleaning crew. So if you have problems getting the book into your tablet or onto your desktop, please contact Zola and they'll work it out.

5. OTHER NOTES!
Zola is primarily a US store, but they are currently working on ways to take orders from abroad. If it doesn't work for your country, contact Zola and they will work something out.
Unfortunately, Zola can't sell to the UK, Australia, or New Zealand, because Vintage Books is already publishing in those countries, so you will have to wait for Vintage to release it--most likely on Amazon, iBooks, etc.

THAT IS ALL I HAVE TO SAY TO YOU. NOW PLEASE ENJOY THIS STORY I WROTE.

Again, this cover isn't quite finished...the kids look stupid.

*I'm totally going to say this a lot more times.

  1. Aw. No worries. I can be patient. :o) And I'm glad to hear that Zola is fighting "the man," aka "Amazon."

  2. Well, who has two thumbs and bought/downloaded the book today? This monster. Who will also be purchasing the print copy when it becomes available? This monster. Yeah. I'm not patient and I'm almost done reading Warm Bodies for the 4th time so I have to have The New Hunger to follow it up with. I read Warm Bodies again once I get the print copy of The New Hunger. Yeah, I'm that kind of nerd.

  3. Yay and thank you! Will buy the print version (in addition to this one).

  4. After what seemed like an eternity of waiting (the book wasn't available till around noon, my time), I finally was able to download! I had to work at noon, but I couldn't help sneaking in some reading on my android! It is absolutely brilliant so far! Well done Isaac. You certainly haven't disappointed me with this lovely, macabre novella.

  5. Bought the book, but for the life of me can't get it downloaded to my computer or the zola app. And I can't find anywhere on the site to get a refund. :(

  7. Sorry to hear it's not available in the UK yet. Is there any way to get Vintage to speed things up a bit? I was really looking forward to reading it yesterday. I read the excerpt beforehand - so good to see more of such beautiful writing and strong characters.

  8. Just finished reading The New Hunger. Oh my gosh. So gorgeous. So sad and yet so hopeful. Is your sole purpose in writing to make me cry? Because that's what it seems like to me sometimes. Lately. Heart-wrenching stuff aside, I loved the answers to some of the unknowns presented in Warm Bodies, and was super excited (because I'm super cool, you know) to see the seeds you've planted for the sequel. I was also delighted by all the song references, particularly Radiohead's "Let Down," which is one of my favorite songs of all time. :o) Beautiful, fabulous, awesome, glorious, (more descriptive words I can't fathom) work, sir. (But quit making me cry already, okay?)

  9. Bitter sweet. Nice to be able to read it but sad that I don't have a hard copy. I was thinking of finishing it soon so I can send both this and "Warm Bodies" over to have you sign them. Oh well.

  10. Warm Bodies is a great read.
I eagerly look forward to the movie.
However, I am very leery of having to register for yet another site,
Another password, other people able to see my preferences.
Zola even asks for my birthdate, which is a security question for other accounts.
I just want to provide my credit card info securely, download, and read in peace.
(Preferably with a good cup of coffee and something chocolate.)
The end of the world is enough stress.
    Suggestions?

I'd probably wait for the paper book of The New Hunger :D

  13. I just finished it! Amazing! I loved it a beautiful masterpiece I couldn't stop reading can't wait to see the Warm Bodies movie! This book was compelling and truly magnificent. It showed the perspective through the eyes of terrified children and the life draining process of becoming a zombie. I was truly inspired again! I read Warm Bodies and loved it, easily one of my favorite books and Isaac is one of my favorite authors now. Its great books like this that inspire to me (successful or not)to become an author someday.

  15. I know lots of people are really not fans of ebooks, but Zola are fantastic. Someone there was very patiently answering my emails at 5:55 New York time (on a Friday!) to make sure I got the book (I was having difficulties because I'm in the UK). To anyone worrying about it, don't - they really do seem to care about their customers, authors and books.

Anyway, The New Hunger kept me up most of the night - first reading it straight through and then my head was buzzing thinking about it. It was a joy to get some more insight into these characters. Some things about them really surprised me. It confirmed Nora Greene as my favourite character - she's just incredible. And that moment where the new character gives *that* speech - my hair stood on end (sorry to be vague, I just don't want to spoil it for anyone).

While I was really happy to hear there was a sequel to Warm Bodies on the way - just because spending time with these characters is always going to make me happy - I didn't think it was *needed*. But The New Hunger opens the world up so much, I've completely changed my mind.

Thanks so much for sharing this all with us, Isaac.

  16. This is gonna be awesome. I havn't actually gotten the book yet, but I really hope to. I read this book at pretty much the time it came out in stores, and I'm sure you've heard this before but it's one of my favorite books of all time so far. By the way, do you remember when it was specifically released? just out of interest :).

  17. So, I went to Barnes & Noble yesterday (which is a big deal, since the nearest one is several hours away) to search for some new books. I looked and looked, until I walked by Warm Bodies. I stood staring at it for several seconds until I grabbed the last copy. On my way home, I grabbed Warm Bodies from the heaping pile of books and began reading. I seriously couldn't put the book down; I wish I had taken my time to read it. But, I finished it last night. It was the most wonderful thing I've ever read.

Anyways, back to something that isn't completely irrelevant, I am really looking forward to reading The New Hunger.

  18. Rarely a book has captured me so easily and quickly. I've bought Warm Bodies friday and I've finished it this morning. The way you wrote this story is simply..fantastic. It has made my heartstrings vibrate. (sorry for my bad english but I dont't know very well English idioms; In this moment I fell like R when he tries to communicate ) The hope the protagonists of the novel release could be a sort of teaching to not back bown, even if the world and the things that make us alive do that. to write, to teach, to make rules for a better place, with the idea that love can guide us to reach our aims. Yes, with this fantastic novel you succeed to spread this beautiful feelings. Beacuse love can make alive also who forgot everything!
With my best whishes and regards, an italian fan!

p.s. waiting for "the new hunger" paper book! :)

  19. I really enjoyed Warm bodies and wanted to buy THE NEW HUNGER, but Zola's support said they cant sell to Russia.
Is there any alternative for me?

    1. Usually they're able to sell to foreign countries through Paypal...did the support agent tell you this directly by email? If so, there might not be a way...but I'm surprised if there isn't.

    2. Yes, by email, they wrote:

"Zola Books currently has the right, from publishers, to sell eBooks only in the US and US territories. We plan to expand the list of countries we serve, so that readers in other countries around the world may enjoy Zola books and the Zola Reader.

I'm sorry we can't sell to you right now - but we're working very hard to make that happen as soon as possible!"

Buying by paypal would be great, too bad if there is no way. Is it impossible to get it elsewhere?
Sure I'll buy it on paper ones it's out, since I love to have the books I really enjoyed on my bookshelf, but that will be later, and I'm in fangirling mode right now.

Thanks a lot for your time.

  20. SPOILER! SPOILER!
    Hi Isaac,
So after seeing the trailer for the movie, I decided to look more into the storyline when I discovered that the movie was based on a book. I knew I had to read it so I nipped over to Amazon and ordered a copy. I finished it in three days and only put it down when I went to work (Although I did try to sneak it behind my Starbucks kiosk and read bits between blending fraps. Unfortunately my manager caught on after a day of that) and when I slept. It was wonderful and is now being passed around to everyone I know that reads and they're loving it too.
It's a shame the movie cut out so much. My two favorite parts of the book are when R and M stage that chase to get R in the stadium (I was giggling at work when I read that and got some looks from some stuckup costumers. Fuck 'em) and then later when R bites that security guard. Super disappointed that those got cut, but oh well. I still enjoyed the movie for what it was.
When I found out about The New Hunger, I was all over it. Started reading it at 10pm and finished it around 3am. Not as funny as Warm Bodies, which it probably was not meant to be. I started jumping at every little noise and bump my house made and was sure to close all the curtains when I read THAT part. *Shudders* Fantastic story though! Thank you for sharing this story and these characters with us. I humbly request more M in the future. Next to R he's my favorite.
    -Eileen.

  21. Hello!
I live in Portugal and I never saw the book Warm Bodies in shops. But the movie come out, so I hope find him in the next week and buy!
The New Hunger is a eBook? I like 'real books', just like you say, but I would not mind reading in eBook. The problem is I don't understand very well English, so... I can't read him. Unfortunately! I will need to wait for the 'normal version' and wait the translation for my idiom. Unfortunately - again!
Conclusion, I hope can read Warm Bodies soon; and I hope you publish The New Hunger in paper, soon.
If I have mistakes in this text, I am sorry. Hope you understand me with this bad version of English.
    Regards,
a future fan (I'm sure this)

  23. Why doesn't Zola Books want my money?

    ReplyDelete

    1. For some reason, ebooks aren't international properties, even though there's no shipping involved. A publisher in your country has to publish it for it to be available in your country. Weird, I know.

Also I was wondering why Nora recognizes neither R nor M in Warm Bodies. Did she simple 'forget' like how she forgot the city (though I interpreted that as her pushing aside what happened rather than erasing it from memory). I know it is hard to remember people's faces after having met them once 7 years ago but especially M must have left a deep impact on her...

I really liked how this book's mood is so different from Warm Bodies, so much more mature though focussing on younger versions of the characters we love. Some moments I enjoyed in particlar were e.g. the skeleton family: Even though they were somewhat suspicious, they still left me in terror the moment they turned out to be boneys. That scene with Julie and her mum stumbling over the radio programme and the disappointment following it was heartbreaking. Julie probably being a main influence in R's slowed down decomposition process just left me speechles.
