THE NEW HUNGER

I have an announcement to make.

This may seem a little sudden. I have dropped vague hints into some of my postings and occasionally revealed the truth to random people on the internet in moments of drunken indiscretion. Passersby on the street have certainly heard me mumbling about it while scratching furiously at my neck with one hand and petting invisible cats with the other. But I've been waiting to officially announce it until I could give you some real information, since the mutterings of madmen count for little in this fast-paced, fact-driven new media web 2.0 world.

So here it is: I've written a prequel to WARM BODIES.

It's called THE NEW HUNGER.

It's coming out on January 28th. Yes, this January 28th. Like...next Monday.

Now I'll provide a little more detail to satisfy the media's insatiable demand for context, nuance, and accuracy.

THE NEW HUNGER is a novella, which is like a novel only cuter. It's 140 pages. It takes place 7 years before WARM BODIES. It involves a formative early encounter between R, Julie, Nora, and M.

12-year-old Julie drives with her parents across the wastelands of mid-apocalyptic America--a nightmarish family road trip in search of a new home.

16-year-old Nora finds herself her brother's reluctant, terrified guardian after her parents abandon them in the ruins of Seattle.

A man in a red tie awakens in a forest with a mind as blank as a baby's. With no idea who or what he is, he must unravel the grim mystery of his existence--right after he learns how to think, how to walk, and how to satisfy the mad creature shouting in his belly.

Unaware that their paths are set to collide, these three warped families move inexorably closer, toward an encounter that will change the course of their lives--and their deaths--forever.

I can hear some of you asking, "Why a prequel? Why should I care what happened 7 fictional years ago? Quit stalling and get on with the sequel!"

Book 2 is about the future, but it gets there via the past. People are forgetful, dead people even more so, and confronting these buried realities will be crucial to understanding the world they're now living in--and how they might attempt to change it. THE NEW HUNGER is a necessary bridge between WARM BODIES and Book 2. It sheds a wider light on the landscape of this world. It introduces people, groups, and cosmic mysteries that will become very important. It shows how R, Julie, Nora, and M ended up where they are now, and points to where they might go next. And in my humble opinion, it's just a fucking good story.

So that is my announcement. I will have more news on release day, such as what this book looks like and where you can acquire it. Have a great weekend, and I'll see you Monday!

With much throbbing love,

Isaac

  9. I am rolling on the floor with joy. :D Hunting this book down and buying it! Every other book I'm reading will be shoved aside so I can read this. I do wonder though, is this a continuation of the short story you had in The Hungry Mouth? Either way I'm psyched!

  11. Thank you so much for this amazing book. I have been telling everyone I know about "Warm Bodies" the book and encouraging folks to see the movie too. One of the best books I've ever read. Thank you for letting me know to look out for this new book in the series.

    Happy Thurs,

  12. Oh you sneaky Pete, I had no idea that you where even working on this. Well played good sir, well played. This is how I know you’re going to survive the apocalypse of fandom. I eagerly await your book release amongst the rest of the screaming ravenous hoard that wants more of the world inside your brain.

  18. You're such a clock tease, Isaac. Cant wait to read it!

  19. Isaac, you're such a dork... But I love it :) It makes you a more down-to-earth guy in the big world of writing vs. writers who pop out a best seller or two and forever have sticks up their asses. Can't wait for this one to come out! I'm also stoked that the released date isn't like, set for next August or something crazy.

  20. I love you!! Monday! It's so close!! And I can read it right before going to the theatre February 1st!! Warm Bodies was STELLAR and The New Hunger will prove to be a most welcome piece of your excellence!

  26. Thank you :) I´m really exited now. Can´t get enough of your story. Read your book twice. In english and german ;)
    First the upcoming movie and now the "The new hunger" ;____;
    All my feelings!!!
Sadly it will take longer to bring the new book to Germany like the movie. It starts 21.02.13...sigh...
Besides you needn´t justify yourself cause it seems like that a bit. If it´s important for the future part to deepen the story through a "prequel" that´s it. I´ll understand it. Sorry for my english feeling a little bit like R ;)

  27. I'm so excited that this book is coming out! However, I can't find it for pre-order anywhere...

    1. It's at Zola books. I haven't announced it because we still don't have a final cover and I don't want that placeholder getting spread around the internet....

  28. Great news!!!!! Please tell me there is a book signing. Book tour? Can't wait to get it Monday and read it before the movie comes out!!! So happy.

  29. Available at Zola Books ONLY??? You could not have picked a more frustrating way to release this book for android users Isaac...

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. You have to buy it at Zola, but you can read it on any device.

      Delete
    2. yeah okay I take that back, the whole site is frustrating in general...cant download on internet explorer, must download Google chrome, must download the bluefire reader app, must figure out how to transfer the file to my phone, wont let me add my credit card to my zola account, ect....you're defiantly getting a fart bomb in your PO box for this one!

  30. I'm not familiar with Zola because I live in the dark ages and do not have any "device" like a Kindle, Ipad, Starship Enterprise, etc. Is there a way for me to obtain the book?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Hm. I did some research and there seem to be a lot of issues with trying to download ebooks through Zola onto my PC, which is my only option since I lack other current technology. Will The New Hunger eventually be available in other formats or through other sellers?

  31. So it's 8:16 am EST... I think that makes it officially the 28th day of January 2013. That means that I should have a pretty little copy of New Hunger on my Kindle. But, alas. It is still sitting in my Zola "pre-order" section. I may have to go eat some people if I don't get my R very very soon.

    1. Same here! >:(

    2. This. It's most definitely the 28th now. It's even half-way to being the 29th. Patience is not one of my many virtues...

    3. It's nearly 11:00 in the morning here and the book hasn't come in for me, either. But the company seems pretty new, and I'm pretty sure The New Hunger is the only book they have available at the moment... So hopefully it's just some minor technical issues.

    4. I had to go back through the ordering process on Zola because it yanked it out of my pre order section. However, I got it just fine the second time around.

  32. Is this going to be out on Amazon soon? I've never heard of and don't trust giving my info out to new places. I'd rather get from
    Amazon..

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Totally understandable, but I'm afraid it's exclusive to Zola for the time being. It's a brand new marketplace run by very cool people and you should give it a chance. I know Amazon is convenient, but they're also a little bit evil.

      Delete
    2. Are they?
Well thank you so much. I want to read this so much so I am going to check it out! :-)

      Delete
  33. I downloaded it, but I just want to say that I think this should become available in paperback and hardcover so I can have it on my bookshelf with my Warm Bodies copies. ;-)

    1. It most definitely will be, but it will take a bit longer than the ebook.

  34. Can someone give me this Zola link? I have never heard of this place before and can't find the link there is so many Zola sites out there

    ReplyDelete
  35. Here's the link to Zola Books:

  36. Okay ... how the heck do you buy on this page? On Zola ... I have put in my info and tried to buy the book, but it doesnt show anything??? Help please?

    1. Like I said in the blog I just posted, Zola is still in beta so it's pretty buggy. If you're having problems, please contact them at info@zolabooks.com and they will sort it out.

  37. Isaac, I think you're awesome and I love you no matter what. All this Zola stuff is frustrating, but I understand it is not your fault. I'd just like to know if the book will eventually be available in other formats so I can read it. :o)

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. The format is just a standard epub that can be read on all devices. What problem are you having?

      Delete
    2. Please don't trouble yourself. I'll ask Zola about it. Basically I can't view it on my PC without downloading extra software and a different browser. I'll work with Zola to fix it. No worries. :o)

      Delete
    3. And I will also, of course, purchase a hard copy of the novella as soon as it's available because I'm a bit of a crazy purist when it comes to books.

  38. Ok I´m living in Germany and I can´t buy it from Zola. So normaly it gets some time to bring it from Amazon.com to Amazon.de. I´m really a patient person but now i´m a little suffering...sigh...

    ReplyDelete
  39. Thank you Universe. I will be late for work tomorrow because I will not sleep until I get my R fix. Thank you Isaac for another masterpiece. I am really enjoying The New Hunger! I can't wait to see the next great thing to come from your brain :)

  47. For the android users having ebook issues, try the Moon+ Reader. Pretty slick. As for Isaac, at first when I saw the warm bodies cover it had an instinctual 'legendary' feel about it. But I ignored it and didn't even read the brief. Later in 2013 Feb, I come across and I get it, but not by IE. And THE NEW HUNGER is a nice brush up to planning of the 'actual' sequel of WARM BODIES. "hope!"

  48. Isaac Marion I love Warm Bodies so much.. I cried a lot don't know why, well maybe because this novel is the best novel ever..

The New Hunger and the Part 2-wish that it will be a movie again... please.. I wish that at 2014 the prequel will be a movie again. I'm so sad because at the first book(warm bodies) there are lot of "R" past unanswered... WHO IS HE BEFORE HE BECAME A ZOMBIE? what was his NAME? It is good if there are lot of sequel..sorry for my english( im not too good in english)

I want to have a prequel movie this year or in 2014... ( great if the actors are the same as in the WARM BODIES movie)

    ReplyDelete
  49. Ahh, I need to read Warm Bodies and The New Hunger.
I've seen the movie, and fell in love with it..And R! LOL.

After seeing it, I really want to read the books! I can't wait for the sequel. Hope these are made into movies as well.

Also, smart thinking. Writing a prequel with the fans unknowing. It was also a nice surprise to have it like 'boom, right off the bat', rather than knowing it's in the making and waiting for it to be finished.
